Empowering Young Voices: The IHRS Mission and Vision
Our Genesis
The International Human Rights Society (IHRS) was founded at CU London out of a simple yet profound observation: while human rights are universal in theory, the path to understanding and defending them can often feel inaccessible to students. We realized that young leaders don't just need a seat at the table; they need the tools to build their own tables.
Since our inception, we have evolved from a small campus group into a sophisticated, multi-departmental organization. Our growth is driven by a singular vision—to create a world where every individual, regardless of their background, is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve as a human being.
The Core Mission: "Bring the Change You Deserve"
This motto is woven into the very fabric of our society. It serves as both a reminder of our responsibilities and a celebration of our potential. For us, "change" isn't a vague concept; it is the tangible improvement in student welfare, the correction of systemic inequalities, and the empowerment of marginalized voices.
A Multi-Pillared Strategy
To achieve this mission, we operate across four primary domains that interact to create a comprehensive support and advocacy network:
1. Education and Awareness
We believe that literacy in human rights is a fundamental requirement for active citizenship. Through our workshops, seminars, and digital campaigns, we break down complex topics such as the European Convention on Human Rights, the UK Equality Act 2010, and international labor laws. We don't just teach these as abstract legal concepts, but as practical tools for everyday life.
2. Campus Advocacy
The university environment is a microcosm of society. We work tirelessly to ensure that policies related to student mental health, academic appeals, and accommodation are fair and transparent. Our advocacy team acts as a bridge between the student body and university leadership, turning individual concerns into collective action.
3. Community Engagement
Our impact extends beyond the campus gates. We collaborate with local NGOs, legal experts, and community leaders to address broader social issues. Whether it's organizing charity drives or participating in national human rights forums, IHRS members are active contributors to the global struggle for justice.
4. Professional Development
Defending human rights requires more than just passion; it requires skill. We provide our members with training in public speaking, policy research, digital marketing, and event management. Many of our alumni have gone on to pursue careers in law, international relations, and social policy, carrying the IHRS ethos into their professional lives.
Our Organizational Structure
To manage our diverse range of activities, we have established several specialized departments, each led by dedicated executive members:
Department Spotlight: Student Affairs
This is the heartbeat of our society. The Student Affairs department provides a confidential and supportive environment where students can seek guidance on anything from academic pressure to welfare concerns. We advocate for students during disciplinary proceedings and help them navigate the complex administrative hurdles of university life.
PR, Marketing & Information Technology
In the digital age, communication is everything. Our PR team ensures that the IHRS message reaches as many people as possible. From managing our social media presence to designing the very website you are reading right now, this department is responsible for our public identity and digital infrastructure.
Events and Engagements
From high-profile guest lectures to casual networking sessions, the Events department brings our community together. They handle everything from logistics and budgeting to outreach and feedback, ensuring that every IHRS event is informative, engaging, and professional.
The Path Forward
As we look to the future, IHRS is committed to expanding its reach. We are currently developing a "Member of the Month" program to recognize exceptional contributions and are planning a series of regional conferences to connect human rights societies across the UK.
But more than anything, our focus remains on individual empowerment. Every student who learns how to challenge discrimination, every member who gains the confidence to speak up in a meeting, and every person who feels less alone because of our support—that is where the real change happens.
"Rights are not just what we are given; they are what we must collectively uphold. IHRS is the platform where that upholding begins for the next generation."
We invite you not just to follow our journey, but to become a part of it. Whether you are a student at CU London or a supporter from afar, there is a place for you in the International Human Rights Society. Together, we can bring the change we all deserve.
